Be.Brain study on high sugar / simple carbohydrate diet and focus

EEG biofeedback especially over the sensory motor area (C3,C4) was used. Volunteers showing
elevated Alpha activity in this near to frontal area while being on a high refined carbohydrate diet
was used. Subjects were between 8 years and 24 years of age.

Alpha seems like a very favourable state as seen in the following short definition available on internet: “What do alpha waves do to the brain?

Alpha waves induce feelings of calm, increase creativity, and enhance your ability to absorb new information. Meditating and practicing mindfulness are some of the most obvious ways to prolong your ability to stay in an alpha state, but there are other ways, as well.14 Jan 2022 https://www.atlassian.com>blog>productivity>alpha

BUT

As seen in the internet quote below elevated Alpha especially near the frontal regions of the brain is indicative of an idle state instead of a very alert and focused state, which is needed while studying or attending class.

Alpha waves aid overall mental coordination, calmness, alertness, mind/body integration and learning. Too much alpha waves cause too much daydreaming, difficulty focusing, and being too relaxed when needing to be alert.21 Nov 2018

Articles such as “Electroencephalogram Reactivity to Hyperglycemia in Patients with Type 1
Diabetes” Cuong Q Ngo, Rifai Chai, Timothy W Jones, Hung T Nguyen indicates changes in Alpha activity with higher blood sugar levels. In practice experience with certain clients who would struggle with controlling elevated Alpha and thus focus on reality after eating a very high carbohydrate snack / meal a study on the latter was motivated.

This is not a formal scientific research study by merely an observation of the brain activity of clients under 25 years with elevated Alpha. Seven (7) subjects were assessed and then proposed to follow a more ketogenic eating pattern cutting out all sugar and refined carbohydrates like bread, cereal,
pasta and potatoes. 5 of the 7 subjects showed improved Alpha activity but did not “normalize” it to below the level of Theta though. One subject showed initial halving of Alpha activity, but then later elevated Alpha again. All subjects with improved Alpha showed significant improvement in performance and focus on scholastic level as well as with most subjects improvement in general and mental energy levels. One subject with elevated Alpha was already on a mostly ketogenic diet, but
experienced elevated stress levels in the months / years before the assessment. This subject followed a proposal of using rhythmic movement like jogging for improvement of Alpha and showed a drop in Alpha below Theta in the post test one month after the initial test.

It can thus be concluded that following a ketogenic diet did improve elevated Alpha levels, mental energy and focus, but did not drop levels to the expected level for people with general good focus abilities. The challenges presented to follow and stick to a ketogenic diet and the impact of other
factors such as stress levels, sleep and screen time might have had an impact too.

The study is continued in 2024 still focusing on the ketogenic diet and ways to make it more achievable. The impact of stress levels and using techniques such as meditation will also be
incorporated.

Alpha activity in the pretest of one of the subjects

The post-test showed Alpha to still be present, but halved in elevation, after 5 months of cutting sugar and refined carbohydrates during the school week but not on week-ends
